Uptake of cephalexin by lettuce, celery, and radish from water

The introduction of pharmaceuticals into agricultural lands from the application biosolids and animal manure, irrigation with treated wastewater has led to concern for human health after ingestion pharmaceutical-tainted products. In this study, uptake accumulation cephalexin, a commonly prescribed antibiotic, was compared in three common vegetables (lettuce, celery, radish) grown nutrient solution 144 h. During experiments, cephalexin concentration decreased order radish > celery lettuce, while vegetable roots followed rank lettuce radish. below limit detection roots. No observed shoots all vegetables. behaviors vivo were further elucidated using vitro measurements sorption by transformation plant enzyme extracts. affinity roots, respective coefficients 687, 303, 161 mL g−1, coupled root extracts estimated reaction rate constants 0.020, 0.027 0.024 hr−1 radish, could help elucidate experiments.
